Discrete Random Variable

Definition We say a random variable is discrete if the range of is at most countable, and we define probability mass function (p.m.f) of to be , denoted

This is very straight forward, because is, well, . There really is no need for other fancy method.

Remark

If is discrete r.v with p.m.f and c.d.f

(a) The sample space need not be at most countable, only the range of need to be at most countable.

(b) for at most countable point, because the range of is at most countable.

(c)

Here, we cannot simply sum over all , because the number of might be uncountable.
